Expert Tip: How to Break In New Reeds (The "Vamp" Care Guide)
To get the absolute best performance and maximum longevity out of your premium cane reeds, we recommend a proper break-in process to prevent waterlogging and warping:
Days 1–3 (Sealing the Cane): Lightly moisten the reed with water or saliva. Gently rub your thumb along the sloped vamp (the cut portion of the reed) from the heel toward the tip. This smooths down the wood fibers and seals the open pores of the cane. Let it dry flat-side down on a clean surface.
Day 4 (The First Note): Play on the new reed for only 3 to 5 minutes. Stick to slow long tones in the middle and lower registers to let the cane adjust to vibration without excessive stress.
Days 5–7 (Gradual Break-In): Slowly increase your daily playing time by a couple of minutes each day, gradually working your way into the higher altissimo registers and wider dynamic ranges.
Rotate Your Reeds: Avoid playing the same reed multiple days in a row. Keeping a rotation of 4 to 5 broken-in reeds allows the cane to fully dry between sessions, drastically extending the life of your entire box.
